Obtaining adequate funding from the State of Alabama for Fiscal Year 2010-2011 is vital to AIDS Service Organizations (ASOs).This year, we are asking for $7.88 million. This is the amount needed to ensure that a waiting list is not created for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) and to ensure that individuals with HIV/AIDS are not dis-enrolled from the program. The results of a waiting list and/or dis-enrollment would be catastrophic for the individual as well as the State. From a strictly financial perspective, maintaining ADAP is a cost-saving measure.Men and women with HIV/AIDS who are not receiving appropriate medications will cost the healthcare system substantially more than would be required to maintain ADAP.
Equally important is the need for $630,000 of the $7.88 million to be marked for Legislative Support Funding.Through the years, this funding has been vital in maintaining the infrastructure for AIDS Service Organizations in the South.Without this funding, the ability of organizations to serve individuals with HIV/AIDS will be severely diminished. In some cases, organizations would not have the capacity to serve at all.
Using the above information, please call or email our Senators and Representatives in March.See the link below for contact information for members of the Finance Committee and the Appropriations Committee.Let them know the importance of maintaining the AIDS Drug Assistance Program and Legislative Support Funding.Thank you.
